Spring Announcements

Happy Spring to everyone!! Just a few announcements about what has been happening in class. First, Ms. Cantlon has informed us that she has rented a small bus for us to take to our swimming classes coming up!! We are so excited for this, so when you see her, don't forget to say "Thank You!" Second, The Toucans have been really enjoying learning about plants and the environment. We have had a fun filled week of Earth activities. Here are few pictures of them with the grass they have been growing. Have a great weekend, and enjoy the weather while it's here.

Welcome Back!

Hello everyone and welcome back from spring break!!

After completing our assessments, and taking a relaxing spring break...we are ready to jump back into learning with the Toucans group. We have a few new friends who have joined our group, and we have all been enjoying getting to know one another recently.

The Toucans have been learning about birds and butterflies in the science theme, among other spring activities. Easter is also quickly aproaching, which means that it is almost time for the annual egg hunt!! Please bring in plastic eggs with treats inside for the children to enjoy! You can ask for details in the office if you have any questions.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Hello Toucan Parents!

A happy St. Patrick's day to you all!!

This will be the last week before we go on Spring Break...hooray! Because the homework folders are often misplaced during the break, we will not be sending home any homework this week.

Also, we will be sending home progress reports at the end of the week. You will be able to pick these up in foyer, or in the office.

We hope that you all have a fabulous spring break!!

Attention Parents:
This week we have an Open House for you to join
On Wednesday March 11th, 2009 at 6:30pm.
Come and experience a miniature day of school with your students.
Watch your yellow, red, and blue toucans enjoy science, math, and reading.
The open house will last approximately 45 - 60 minutes.
There will be four 10 minute rotations, where you will be able to see your students in a "typical" day at school setting.
Hope to see you there!

A Few Changes

Dear Toucan parents,

This letter is to inform you of all the new changes that are happening in the Balloon and Toucan classes. The two classes have been separated into three Toucan classes based on each child’s phonics skill level. There is no longer a Balloon class. The first Toucan level is the red Toucans. The red Toucans have begun to read short vowel books and spell short vowel words. The second Toucan level is the blue Toucans. The blue Toucans are pre-readers; they are mastering the skills of letter sound sight recognition. They also are learning to form the letters of the alphabet. The third group is the yellow Toucans. The yellow Toucans practice auditory development; they participate in daily listening stations, nursery rhymes, and visual distinction activities.

The three teachers for the Toucans are Mr. Butler, Ms. Richmond and Mr. Loehr. Mr. Butler instructs and is responsible for all of the Toucans’ auditory and phonetic development. Ms. Richmond instructs and is responsible for all of the Toucans’ math skills: counting, transference, one-to-one correspondence, sequencing, and patterning. Mr. Loehr instructs and is responsible for the Toucan’s science and theme comprehension, from dinosaurs to clouds and everywhere in between. There is a high concentration of fine motor development in all classes throughout the day.

Homework will be given on Tuesday and should be returned to school by the following Monday. Return homework folders to the top of the cubbies; there are separate homework bins for yellow, blue and red Toucans. Please sign your name in the date completed box on the homework log, located in your child’s homework folder. There will be a description of your child’s homework on the Toucan information board. If your child is not present or does not have a homework folder on Tuesday you can pick up your child’s homework in the homework box located in the CLASS Academy foyer.

If you have any questions about the new and exciting changes please speak to a friendly Toucan teacher.

Congrats!!

The artists of the month for January will be our our newest students Audrey, Brendan and Collin Scott. Congrats to the triplets on their great work!!

Also we would like to send a warm welcome to the newest member of the Pathuparambil family. Shaun is now the proud older brother of his new baby sister Sherin. We wish you all the best, and we can't wait to meet Sherin!

In other news, ice skating has begun on Tuesdays and we have been having a blast!! The children have had a bit of a slippery start, but most of them are feeling much more confident after a couple of practice rounds. We would like to recommend that the parents write their student's shoe size on their hands the morning of ice skating in order to help with the process. Also, red shirts are to be worn on these days.

Welcome Back...Hopefully

We are keeping our fingers crossed that school will begin tomorrow without any snow delays or closures!  If Portland Public Schools (PPS) are delayed we will open at 10am, but will remain open regardless whether PPS closes on short notice.  If PPS is closed tomorrow we too will be closed.  You can check www.flashalert.net under "Private & Charter Schools - Portland Area" for updates on CLASS Academy delays or closures.
